Exploring and modeling unimanual object manipulation on multi-touch displays

چکیده
Touch-sensitive devices are becoming increasingly wide-spread, and consequently gestural interfaces have become familiar to the public. Despite the fact that many gestures require frequently dragging, pinching, spreading, and rotating the finger-tips, there currently does not exist a human performance model describing this interaction. In this paper, a novel user performance model is derived for virtual object manipulation on touch-sensitive displays, which involves simultaneous translation, rotation, and scaling of the object. Two controlled experiments with dual-finger unimanual manipulations were conducted to validate the new model. The results indicate that the model fits the experimental data well (with R2 and R values above 0.9), and performs the best among several alternative models. Moreover, based on the analysis of the empirical data, the simultaneity nature of manipulation in the task is explored and several design implications are provided.

LTouchIt: LEGO Modeling on Multi-Touch Surfaces
Presently, multi-touch interactive surfaces have widespread adoption. Taking advantage of such devices, we present an interactive LEGO application, developed accordingly to an adaptation of building block metaphors and direct multi-touch manipulation. Although touch-based interaction has evolved in the past years, manipulation of 3D objects can not be used without know-how of CAD and 3D modelin...
متن کاملA Multi-touch System for 3D Modelling and Animation
3D modelling and animation software is typically operated via single-pointer input, imposing a serialised workflow that seems cumbersome in comparison to how humans manipulate objects in the real world. Research has brought forth new interaction techniques for modelling and animation that utilise input with more degrees of freedom or employ both hands to allow more parallel control, yet these a...
متن کاملEvaluation of 3D Object Manipulation on Multi-touch Surfaces Using Unconstrained Viewing Angles
Recently, considerable research has been carried out regarding threedimensional object manipulation on multi-touch surfaces. However, most current solutions were developed having in mind scenarios with a camera perpendicular to a scene axis, and cannot be easily used to manipulate threedimensional objects in unconstrained viewpoints. In this paper, we present and evaluate a set of object manipu...
متن کاملUnimanual and bimanual weight perception of virtual objects with a new multi-finger haptic interface.
Accurate weight perception is important particularly in tasks where the user has to apply vertical forces to ensure safe landing of a fragile object or precise penetration of a surface with a probe. Moreover, depending on physical properties of objects such as weight and size we may switch between unimanual and bimanual manipulation during a task. Research has shown that bimanual manipulation o...
متن کاملA web-based toolkit for remote direct manipulation interaction with public displays via smartphones
Public displays are becoming increasingly interactive but we still need better programming tools that take the burden of adding interaction features to display applications. In this paper, we present a toolkit for web-based, remote, direct manipulation interaction with public display applications. Our toolkit provides high-level controls such as joystick, text input, and multi-touch cursor even...
